Last week, I fired my agent. There were a handful of reasons, most of which I don’t need to go into here–though I will mention that she had never heard of Uppercase magazine. Really? In this industry–unacceptable. They say an agent-artist relationship is like a marriage–and in this partnership had no spark. No magic.
With intention, I am flying solo once again, making space for what’s up around the bend.
The image above was from our final class assignment. We learned about the gift market, which includes note cards, pencil cases, iPad covers, tote bags, etc. Our assignment was to design a lush pencil pouch featuring some type of collection. My piece began with an assortment of vintage suitcases and this is what I came up with.
The past five weeks have been intense. My head is still spinning with all that I learned–and more importantly, all that I want to make happen. I am inspired and overwhelmed. My to-do list goes on for days.
I could write an overview of the course, about my breakthroughs. And breakdowns. But here is what I really walked away with:
- Follow Your Joy
- Keep At It
- There are many avenues to success
- Your Talent is Not Finite
- Your Support Network is Indispensable.
If you really want to succeed in this uber-competitive industry, the most successful artists are doing what comes naturally to them. Follow Your Joy. Make what you love. It will shine through. And others will buy into that. It’s more than just putting colors and shapes together.
It’s also a numbers game. Keep at it. Send your work out. To lots of people, in lots of different markets. And remember, the more work you do, the better you will get.
Develop a stellar support network, be they fellow artists, encouraging family members, or a good therapist–and then make sure you show gratitude for those sweet souls who are helping you make your career as an artist a reality. They are everything.
